SÃO NICOLAU

Although sometimes overlooked by visitors who don’t have time to see more than one or two islands, São Nicolau is immensely rewarding to explore. A great part of its attraction lies in the fact that so few foreigners make it here, so it remains thoroughly unspoilt: self-sufficient hikers and mountain bikers could easily spend several enjoyable days trekking through its mountainous terrain. But what makes São Nicolau unique is its cultural heritage: it is the former home of a leading academic institution, the Seminário da Ribeira Brava, which trained some of the island’s finest minds in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The legacy of this time continues to colour the atmosphere of the island community, and the capital, Vila da Ribeira Brava, is vaguely reminiscent of an old university town.

Though one of the islands which makes the fewest concessions to tourists, São Nicolau nonetheless is set up with neatly kept pensões and friendly restaurants where you can tuck into deliciously fresh fish or môdje, a favourite stew, generally made with vegetables and goat meat.
